Which laptop should I buy?

I am looking to get a high spec laptop, I have had a look at Dell and sony, and have found Acewr would be the cheapest, this brings up questions:

Is acer build quality good?
Is their customer support good?
Why are they cheaper?

I have a few laptops in mind, but cannot tell which processor is better unless I look at the speed (not sure whether speed tell u everything)

They are

Acer Aspire 8920G

Acer Aspire 8930G

6935

http://www.simplyacer.com/6935

Or these

http://www.simplyacer.com/8930

Which is best, why?

And which is BEST VALUE? And why?

I am confused, don't know which to go for!

Also, has anyone ever used Simplyacer before?

You could do far worse than an Acer, but a current report I saw put Sony and Toshibas at the top of the scale for reliability. Acer was middle of the road
Personally speaking id buy a Toshiba from LAPTOPSDIRECT

I would check out any laptop visually first as work have gone from Fujitsu laptops to Toshiba ones and the latter hark back to the old days where a laptop looked like a brick and felt like one.

    Nope.

    See above.

Apple and Lenovo make the highest quality laptops. Some Sonys are quite good too.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a Toshiba with a barge-pole after seeing my sister's creaky piece of plastic junk that started falling apart the moment she got it.

If you're looking for something that's really cheap, well made, and will last a long time, you might be out of luck. Those three things generally don't go together.

Typical. Suppose you think Skodas are still awful too?

Probably the same source Rik was thinking of.

Acer quality has improved massively over the last few years and have been trying to improve their low cost, low quality reputation. I've had laptops from several of the main manufacturers, and have found Acer and Toshiba to be pretty good. Wife's Toshiba laptop used for hours every day and has never failed. Perhaps your sister should have looked after it more?

PC laptops, high end ones at least: Levono are in a class of their own (only comparable to Apple), then Sony and Dell Latitudes are excellent business quality systems too.

However some of the Acers are excellent and very powerful.

Read some comparative reviews, such as http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/176/do-it-all-laptops/products.html and http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/175/netbook-killers/products.html

Search the reviews for more up-to-date tests.

I've never been very impressed with Tosh's either...

What about the PC World deal - Acer 5735Z-423G for £349 - is this any good?

I'm looking for a decent laptop so I can get online at home. Small flat so no room for PC. Mostly for internet use, photos and watching the odd DVD.

    Key Features:-
    • Intel Pentium Dual Core processor T4200
    • 3GB memory
    • 160GB hard drive
    • Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
    • 15.6" widescreen display
    • Intel GMA HD4500 graphics card
    • Wireless enabled
    • Up to 3 hours battery life

This is likely to be better. Though it doesn't have quite as much RAM, you can always add more later.

Not the best processor, useless Vista Basic, low end graphics, and from PC World. Wouldn't be on my list!

I have had three Acer laptops and been more than satisfied with the reliability and support. I now have a Toshiba and I'm also very satisfied with it. These haven't just been sitting on my desk, they've been bouncing around in my car and used primarily on site in often hot and damp atmospheres.

You can't glibly write off a brand unless you back it up with some facts. I think the OP would prefer an objective rather than a subjective opinion.

clkaz, can you expand on exactly what you'll be using the laptop for? It will be easier to maker a recommendation if we can understand which aspects are going to be most important.
