Wouldnt really worry about the warning, theres a utility called SSC freeware that should get around the warning.
    http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml available here.

maybe the chip got a bit duster inside the printer, if it wasnt in use, or maybe the chip died.
you didnt state what the make of the compatible are or where you got them.
Personally I get mine from ebay, i have a sx200 which i believe is compatible with the bx300f, the cartridges i get have the version 6 chip.
There are 2 different sellers, 1 is selling compatibles with 12ml the other 18ml per cartridge.

InkPower 12ml 12cartridges 3 sets or any mixture of colors, £11.99 including p&p checked price today
Inkshop24 who seem to be currently out of ink.
I've bought Inkpower before and they are good. printer didnt say not compatible, and no i wasnt using the SSC program above

Well if you installed SSC and your still getting the error, and you get the error when using epson cartridges I would say take the printer back to where you bought it for an exchange.
small note make sure to put the epson cartridges back in it, if you leave the compatibles in it, you have invalidated the warranty by using compatibles, and not epson genuine.

could be a chip failure does it not recognise all the cartridges or only certain ones

have you updated your printer drivers recently if so i have heard rumors that epson embed firmware updates in there drivers to update the eprom on the printer

    looking forward to your reply
