Faulty Macbook Pro Charger - HELP!

Hi guys!

Bit of a problem with my Macbook Pro charger I'm afraid. I bought the MBP 14 months ago and today, 2 months out of warranty the charger has stopped working completely.

I phoned Apple today and the guy told me that I wouldn't be entitled to a replacement as I'm out of warranty. However I thought I was covered by the Sale Of Goods act or something. The charger is a vital piece of the kit and without it I'm kinda screwed because a replacement would cost me £58.

What are my consumer rights in this case? Help!

you are indeed covered by the sale of goods act (S14 to be precise)

you need to read up on the act by googling section 14 of it

the compose a letter to the store and head office in the uk stating that the goods have not met their requirement under the act of durability and satisfactory quality.

give them 10 days to respond with a suitable resolution otherwise you will involve trading standards and begin small claims proceedings.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Apple are usually v good. I had to have 3 batteries replaced before the had a reccall on them, and the plastic casing on my macbook. Phone them up again and quote the sale of goods act, the operator usually has to speak to their manager but it should be okayed. They then send out the new item and you send your faulty one in the packaging provided. Or if you are in a rush, they can give you a reference number to take to your local apple store and they will swap faulty for new there and then.

If you are a student you also can claim a 3year extended warranty (i think) but the sales of good act should be suffice- just speak confidently to them!

O and look if your fault is a common one by googling it, that gives evidence that they may be knowingly selling faulty goods

    Hi there,

Well! I had such fun with this one. On Friday the 3rd of July I went into the Glasgow Apple store. I spoke to one of their customer service people and told them about my problem. They said that as I was coming to them after owning the item for 14 months I was out of warranty and nothing could be done. I quoted the SOGA and the person actually said that "because Apple is an American company they don't have to adhere to UK law". I told the person that this was patent nonsense and asked to speak to a manager.

The Manager wasn't much better and didn't seem to have much of a grasp on what my rights are either. He kept blabbering on about the company policy and at one point said that 14 months was quite a long time to have a laptop! Hilarious, given that my last Dell laptop went for over four years without a hiccup.

He told me to come in on Monday the 6th with it and speak to one of their Geniuses. I did and left it with them on Monday lunchtime. I got it back from them the next day (rather than 7-10 days later) and they'd replaced a whole load of internal parts and replaced the keyboard and top cover. I also got a new AC adapter.

So the long and short of it is that I got £750 worth of repairs and a new charger worth £60 from Apple, for nothing! Macbook is now running smoothl and all is well.

I am in a situation with Apple right now, have a few letters bouncing around which can be found here if anyone is interested.

No intention of hijacking this thread but I am encouraged in your win in this case.

Although my MacBook is a year and seven months old, I have found out that the motherboards were suspect and was advised by trading standards that I do in fact have a good case to get a repair.

Bit of searching found many people explaining the same issue I had.

    Hi there,

Good grief that seems like some hassle you've had there. My advice to you would be to hold your ground and make them aware that you know your rights under the Sale Of Goods Act. I also fired off an email to sjobs@apple.com explaining my frustration and concerns over the quality of their products and I got a call from their Executive Customer Support two days later.
Stick at it and you'll get there in the end.
