  • This is a great day RB, for all of us. We're each in the trenches with one another & I can't get enough of seeing someone finally reach their DFD. And doing it while you are pregnant as well is amazing!
I hope no matter what you stay on the boards. What I would love to see is an update from you in 6 months time or so. Could you come back on & let us know how things have improved/how you have kept up with the savings habit? Of course, you'll also be giving birth around then, so I want an update on that too!
    Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your lovely replies - that's why I love this site, everyone is so supportive.

Paying it all back wasn't easy at first, we were £7k in debt, had no money in the account and were up to our overdraft limit, we both buried our head in the sand financially and we were also having problems with our relationship.

I calculated what was outstanding, it made me sick. We had 5 finance agreements, were up to the overdraft limit, I had 2 storecards and 3 credit cards and roversbloke had 2 credit cards  . Firstly, I took out a loan to clear the overdraft and we seperated our finances and kept the joint account for our bills to make sure the bills were paid and had our own accounts for our spends and paying off our own credit cards. If I'd have discovered this site sooner, I probably wouldn't have taken the loan but I had no other clue what to do.

Without knowing what snowballing was, thats what I started to do from our joint account. We paid additional amounts each month into the joint account and cleared each finance agreement as and when we had enough saved up in the joint account. We cancelled unneccesary items like sky sports and reduced the broadband speed, and I started to keep a spending diary which was a real eye opener.

From my own account, I started to tackle the credit and store cards starting with the lowest outstanding amount and was hoping to be debt free in March 08.

We then had a cheap holiday and whilst we were in the car I tuned to Radio 2 and first heard Martin :money: and discovered this site. I started to move the credit card balances around to save interest (luckily my Egg anniversary date was due) and worked hard on clearing the debts from both my account and the joint account. This site has saved me loads and the support on this board has kept me going when I was feeling fed up with it all, even when I wasn't posting, reading other peoples stories helped me keep my chin up.

In December, I found out that the company I work for was being taken over, so my share options and shares were to be purchased. I received the money last month and used this to clear the last of my debt and joint debt and I still have a wee bit left over for me (more likely for the baby!)

So thats it, as a result of the last 12 months, roversbloke and I are closer, I'm in control of my finances, roversbaby is on the way and I've discovered a wonderful group of people. I'm also more canny with my cash and now see through glossy advertising and can live happily without spending.

Apologies for the essay and thanks for reading!

Thanks again, you're all fantastic :T
