I can't really help you out too much but when my son was working in Florida for a year he said the mobile comms out there was terrible. So networks on payg still charge for you to receive calls and texts and across state lie its all various networks.
Hopefully someone will be along with more up to date advice.0 -

HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Lots of hotels and motels in the US now have free wifi for guests.0

Not sure about the US, but when we spent a month in Canada last year I managed quite well with the wireless capabilities of my Asus 701.
Most 'touristy' hotels/motels had free internet access for guests either wifi or wired (take a network cable with you). However the large 'business' chains eg Marriott and Hilton charged for usage. On these days we found a local restaurant or coffee shop with access or found the local public library which either had wifi or free use of their computers.

Wifi almost everywhere. I go to the US ten times a year and rarely if ever pay for Internet access. These days hotels, especially towards the budget end of the market, give free wired or wifi access as a way of making their hotel and rooms more competitive.0

Absolutely.
Just came back a few weeks ago from Chicago/Vegas trip and had no problems using my netbook via free wireless in hotels.
All networks in the US charge to receive calls on mobiles. This is down to the fact that mobiles do not have a dedicated dialling code/call charge rate as we do here, i.e. all mobile numbers start 07 and usually cost more (unless you are MSE savvy). In the US all mobiles have a local area code and it is free to call from a landline within the local area.
The only way around this is to have for example an AT&T/Cingular PAYG, then any calls within AT&T/Cingular networks are free, as are calls within the same area code to landlines.

There is a reason for this, and it isn't just PAYG across in the states.
in America, for example, NYC has an area code of 646 (amongst others).
On the other hand, you can also have a mobile/cell phone with an area code of 646.
So basically, you have no clue if you - the end user, are calling a mobile or a land line.
So, the system they use all across the USA, is different to what we use in the UK. In the UK, the Calling Party pays, which is why all mobile numbers start with 07, and therefore you're aware that you're calling a mobile!0
