Hi all,
Ive had my xbox a few years now and i just got the red ring on it so im guessing that is bad times.
Does anyone know if this can be easily fixed? or if not where is the best place to buy a cheaper 2nd hand 1?
Cheers in advance

It's called the 'RROD' (Red Rings Of Death) because your xbox stops working, you then have to call Microsoft: 0870 60 10 100 and they ask for your details, they will either send you a label to put on your xbox box to return the thing to them, just the xbox mind - NOTHING ELSE! No cables, no joysticks\pads just the xbox itself! In a box obviously, or they will send you a courier with a box if you don't have the box. You stick yours in it, they go off and return with a repaired xbox in around 4 - 6 weeks iirc.
HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Micrsosoft have an extended three year warranty for some Xbox faults, so definitely worth trying to get it repaired by them. Is it under three years old?0

I had the same problem, I was fortunate as they sent me a brand new console altogether so I only had to wait a week.
Don't forget to detach the hard drive too.0 -
Hey Guys,
Thank you very much for all your answers. Im going to give them a ring and then hopefully i can get it sorted, i think ive only had the machine about 2 years now. So hopefully its all still covered
Thanx again0 -
Wrap it in a towel and put it in the oven for half hour! This happened to me mate and he found a guide saying to do the above and it actually worked surprisingly as the oven overheats the xbox and fixes it temporarily haha. He wasn't in warranty so had to fix it himself, changed the fan and something else inside i think. Apparently it's quite easy.0

You don't even need the original packaging , i stuck mine in a wine box .
you will get the despatch labels via Email for you to print off and stick to the box . you then call up the courier Microsoft will advise you about , who will arrange collection from your house .
i got a working Xbox back after 1 week . it was not the one i sent mind , i'm sure the repair place just stick the broken one you send on the broken pile and get you a new box off the mended pile.
so make sure you have nothing attached , not even the hard drive or even a custom face plateBetter in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -
Depending on the xbox manufacture date, it might not fall under the 3 year warranty.
There are lots of places that repair xboxes. SWMBO's brother bought an ebay kit and it did the fix himself, still working after 9 months. He was refused a repair by microsoft because he bought his with the updated cooling setup.
It still caused the RROD, but produces a different code, which microsoft say its not the same RROD fault.0 -

I've heard of the towel trick, but not the towel + oven trick.
Personally, I wouldn't try either.0 -
The towel trick was "invented" for a temporary solution to fixing the Xbox 360 when the warranty was only for 12 months, as invariably the console usually suffer the RROD virtually 1 week after the warranty ran out.
Seeing as pressure from the public forced Microsoft to increase the warranty period from 12 months to 36 (3 years), there should be no reason to put your machine anywhere near a towel, an oven or any other heat device."See you on the Other Side"0
