EDF Energy is horrible...any ideas?
Today, I found out that edf charged me over 1070 GBP for "catch up" charges. I've lived in the same flat for about 2.5 years, and they just decided to read the meter one day and back charge me for the entire period.
I make consistent monthly payments, and then out of nowhere this happens. What, they can't read my meter more frequently than that to see if there is an issue?
Whether they legally can do this, they shouldn't be able to. If anyone knows what type of action can be taken then it would be greatly appreciated... In my opinion, the company could be hurting for money and simply give themselves as much of an infusion of cash as they ever need with this type of action.
Not to mention that the customer service rep was extremely apathetic...
Any thoughts?

Did they not use the readings you could submit to them or something?0

It is always advisable to keep an eye on these things, ensuring that your meter is read from time to time and if not, returning your own readings. Have you been getting quarterly bills with estimated amounts? If so, did you check the estimates against the actual readings?
By consistent monthly payments do you mean direct debits? In that case they normally review these once per year to see if the amount needs to be increased or decreased.
I thought that EDF ensure that all meters are read at least once per year: if they call when you are not in they leave a card that you can fill in. If you really do owe them all this money then I am not sure what you can do other than ask to pay it off in installments.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

The front page of an EDF bill will clearly state if your bill is based on an estimated reading and will also state that you could save money by providing an actual reading and then goes on to actually tell you to read your meter and requests that you call in with the reading.
I hope you did this, otherwise there is no type of 'action' that can be taken other than to pay them what you owe.
