Hi, does anyone know if BT now charge for barring premium rate numbers (09....)

I'm moving in a shared house and we need the line for internet only. BT have told me twice that there is a charge for blocking these numbers. When asked if they ever blocked them for free they as they have always charged.

I know people have had it free, a quick search on google show this. There is a £2.50 add on that enables you to do call baring on the phone, turning it on and off at will with a code, I think they are mistake with this. Does anyone know the exact name, if it exists, of having 09..... numbers blocked.

Also, if they do charge, can you ask BT to set the credit limit at the price of the line rental? Would it just stop calls when you hit that limit or do you get disconnected (and interrupting the broadband)

Many thanks

If you only require the line for the internet why do you need call barring? Is there someone in the household you do not trust?

I still get 09 call barring from BT for no charge.

    EDIT

I am sure it used to be shown on my paper bill as a no charge item but I can't see it now on the online version.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

It is possible to have Premium Rate Numbers barred from your BT Line free of charge. Simply wait until your line is active and call BT once has been done to have the Premium Rate Call Barring added to you account, this will be done free of charge.
