One for the mac experts. I need internet access now and then for my power book when away from home, nothing fancy. The Apple site used to have recommended 3G phones for this but a cant find it. I have considered a doggle but a phone is fine for my limited needs.

An iPhone would be the obvious solution, but its tethering isn't cheap.

I don't understand why you say "a phone is fine for my limited needs" when a dongle is more limiting than a phone.

Doggles aren't really suitable for providing Internet access. Would one of these do instead? They're a lot cheaper than any HSDPA equipped phones you might find. :D

Nice one! I had to re-re-read your post and it still didn't make sense until I hit your link.. quality Doggles!

OP: I have the 3 mobile dongle on PAYG. Reception has been surprisingly excellent and gets HSDPA speed. Compared to my wifes Vodaphone equivalent it kicks butt..
However.. 3 haven't spent to much time on the pre-loaded software for Mac users. It connects you and not much more.
Load the same dongle on Windows and you can use the 500 free texts you get with each top up, monitor your usage locally and recieve latest updates.

Doesn't bother me as I only use it for t'internet and speed was the bigger factor for me.

Thanks all. When away from home (not often) all i need is to send is a few Emails with small file size attachments (PDF). This is only maybe 2 weeks a year. I understand you cant sent attachments from an Iphone. All the doggles i have seen cost around £10 a month whether a use it or not. I presently use my old 2G phone for this through GPRS WAP but need a new phone.

If you really dont't want a dongle, have you considered using wireless hotspots instead?
  • Does your mac have bluetooth? Or can you use a bluetooth adaptor to synch to a mobile and get a data tariff for a few quid on your mobile deal?
