Hand luggage question

Am off to Spain on Saturday flying with Ryanair.
I am sure that on previous flights with other airlines I could take my handbag and another piece of hand luggage but according to the Ryanair website you are only allowed one piece of hand luggage.
Can anyone set me straight on whats allowed?Is my handbag going to count?

At the airport:

Arrive in good time - know the check-in times for your flight. We recommend that you present yourself at the airport 2 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure time. Airport check-in opens two hours prior to scheduled departure and closes strictly 40 minutes prior to scheduled departure. Web check-in passengers must arrive at the boarding gate 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure.
Hand baggage - make sure you know your allowance. Each passenger (excluding infants) is permitted to carry one piece of hand baggage on board. The hand baggage must not weigh more than 10kg and be less than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, in dimensions. For the safety and convenience of all passengers, hand baggage must fit underneath the seat or in the overhead compartment.
Get to the boarding gate in good time - boarding starts for 30 minutes before departure. Families travelling with young children, elderly passengers and reduced mobility/vision impaired passengers will be boarded first.
Have your travel documents ready at the gate - your boarding pass and passport/photo-id.

Can't you put your handbag inside another piece of handluggage until you get onboard as a precaution?

Ive travelled a few times with Ryanair and had no problems with taking a rucksack and small handbag on board. I think provided you dont overload the handbag, keep it small and its just got the essentials, money, passports, tickets etc they are fine or at least have been in the past. If you are worried try to leave enough room in your carry on bag to squeeze it in if needed.

I know what they say about 1 piece of hand luggage but from personal experience ( i work at an airport ) i would say about 60-70% of people getting on a plane have handbags, carry on bags and carrier bags full of bits they have just bought in the departure lounge. HTH.

anyone know techniques/methods to increase baggage allowance? my GF is moving here and is flying from outside the country, but KLM is only giving her 20KG... we KNOW it will be over that limit, i called them up and they said just to beg at the counter..!

When I moved here from Sydney, I was only allowed 20 kilos.. however I had 28 kilos in my baggage, and 12 kilos in my handluggage. I arrived early, was the second person to check in, was very polite and dressed nicely, smiled and flirted with the guy behind the counter and told him my life story (ie, I was moving to another country) and he let me through with no problems.

Another option is to give items to friends to take in their luggage that are will be going to London on a holiday?
