Declining state of local journalism

Sounds a lot more entertaining than my local newspaper.
I refuse to buy it but like to count the amount of times they use the word "slam" in their headlines when I'm over at my gran's house ("Council slams."..."Local Residents Slam...")"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" My mother was a well-respected, national award winning local journalist for over 20 years (she won awards regionally and nationally for investigative and local govt. journalism). She then went into training journalists for a while and then left the profession. One of the reasons she left was because most local newspapers all got bought out by one of the big chains, who started doing all their training in-house and basically churning out rubbish - the quality of the local paper (which she wrote for for over 20 years) has absolutely plummetted recently - as has the circulation. All the exposes of mishandled council contracts, crumbling schools - everything like that that the paper used to run have gone out of the window in favour of "local mother furious that someone at the bus stop looked at her funny".
But yep they'd always want the mandatory "local person looking stern and indignant in front of the scene of the incident photo" (added points if you can get a child looking grumpy as well.
Yep it's getting a lot lot worse - but I'll never ever resort to bashing journalists en-masse... can't do really when 3/4 of my family are trained as them (I'm the black sheep of the bunch)!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0
