Carpets - Scotchgard or not?

Just got measured for new carpets and the quote includes Scotchgard protector (for stains etc). It works out at about £4 per square metre extra to include this - which will add some £500 to my total bill.
Anyone any experience of this? Or whether one can do it oneself easily and more inexpensively?
ps I am also insured against accidental damage to carpets on my home policy so wondering whether I should be even entertaining this idea in the first place.
Thanks in advance.

Depending on the expense of the carpet but iwas told last week that lots of the carpet already have a scotchgard on them, I was looking at about 25 per sq mtr.
In my opnion scotchguard is for all the little spills and stains and not for a major insurance claim preventor
Depends on the colour carpet too, kids, pets etc0 -
Have had experience of with and without. In my last house I put down a light sand coloured carpet and had it stain guarded. Was really pleased I did but I don't remember it being as expensive as you quoted. Our inherited carpet now is brilliant to get stains out of so I presume it has also been treated. You can also buy carpets with built in stain repellant I think. Years ago I got someone who came in to clean the then inherited carpet with a spray on guard which also did make a difference.
If it gives you peace of mind to know that the carpet will be cleaned or even replaced if there is a stain you cannot remove yourself I would go for one with the stainguard. I know I get stressed out with the 2 year old escaping into the lounge with drinks and snacks - all my sofas and chairs are treated too!0 -
Well my experiance was from about 10 years ago when I worked for John Lewis in the Carpet Dept. As a shockingly honest company we did not reccommend Scotchguarding carpets, whlst it is good at one off stains it was rubbish for general dirt, this was particularly true for (mostly) wool carpets. If someone really wanted it we would do it, but we never even even offered it to customers - they had to ask.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0
