Paying a credit card doesn't always work

Incredible.Today I checked my HSBC credit card and found I had been charged £20 for late payment on 6th April.
OK so I paid 1000 off during March, so why was I charged for the late payment I enquired of Indian sounding lady.
Her answer. You were charged because the payment was received before the new statement was sent out and although it was after last statements pay by date it was placed on last months payments.
But if that was the case I would have been in credit I said Yes,but because you didn't pay any other payment the required payment of 3.71 was not met and you ahve been charged 20 ukp.
Of course eventually the payment was refunded with the proviso that if I did the same thing again I wouldn't be refunded payment.
As I said incredible, no amount of reasoned argument could obtain any change of perpective or advice who else to talk to, stonewalled supremely.

Funny you brought this up, I paid mine via there own ATM machine on the 31st March and the due date was on the 3rd April.
The money came out of my account on the 31st March but when I checked on the 2nd April, it still had not gone through. I phoned the customer services number and was told that nothing can be done as it takes 4 working day's for any payment to the Credit Cards to clear! On the ATM machine, it had no mension of how long it would take to clear! Anyway, to cut it short...I told him that the money had came out of my account on the 31st March but not cleared for the payment, he said that if you do get charged, take the proof (Print out of online banking page) to the branch and get the charge refunded. I asked about the Credite Reference agencies too as to if it shows up as a defaulted late payment and he said maybe...I had to get the branch to get this amended too if I did get a default on my file.

Luckily for me, the payment went through on the 3rd April, the date it was due to be paid.

After my application taking two months nearly to complete back in December I finally got my card and compensation from them after complaining.

Today I had reason to use their complaints procedure again. Why ?
My first payment to the card was due 02/04/06 and today a late payment fee of £20 was charged to the account as a payment had not been made. Deserved you say, but not in my case because four weeks ago I set up a DD to pay the minimum each month. I have confirmation of that in writing from them too, stating the first payment will leave by 02/04/06, but obviously they did'nt action it !!!
The £20 will be re-credited back to the account so no real harm done, but when I insisted on them putting it in writing that this will not show up on my credit report as a late payment they were rather put out and became rather defensive. I finally got my way and will be expecting a letter shortly.
I only have the account for stoozing purposes, but that won't stop me from composing another formal complaint to the CEO.
