Need serious cleaning help (kitchen)

The kitchen is in a very icky condition, and my fiances' parents have gone away for the weekend so I'm trying to get it clean before they come back, as they don't seem to mind it.
My serious problems are:
Probably years of burnt on black stuff on pans. I've tried scubbing with a brillo pad, and attacking with a knife, but it's not much better yet.
Again, probably years of burnt on black stuff around the hob. It's a gas hob.
Burnt on grease along the back wall. It still feels sticky and greasy.

It's their kitchen, but I live here. And the mess annoys me.Debras_Angel wrote:Juno is it their kitchen you mean or yours?Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

If it is their kitchen I would just leave it. I would be rather offended to come home from holiday and find someone else had cleaned my kitchen because it wasn't good enough for them.0

Try ammonia on blackened deposits on pans etc - as long as they are not non stick.
Put pans into big black bin bag after spraying with ammonia solution and tie up bag - leave outside or in garage overnight then the gunge should just wipe off.
Never add bleach to this and do not breath it in as it is very strong."This site is addictive!"

Pans: smother them in oven cleaner, leave them outside overnight or all day, then wash in hot soapy water. Failing that get some new ones from the charity shop. I got a beautiful stainless steel frying pan for £1.50.
Is it your kitchen? why is it so icky? If you get it stripped of ick now you will have to keep on top of it, then it wont be so bad again.
I have used oven cleaner on the stove top and on the walls before. Kitchen power DOES exactly what it says on the tin, and astonish oven cleaner is good for pans and the stove top too and is made of OS ingredients, and you can get it in poundland.

Juno be very careful!
It's great that you are willing to do this but you may really upset them.
I did this once at my fathers fiance's house and cleaned out years of muck and old packages and the kitchen was like a new pin.
Went down like a lead ballon as I was accused of being a snob and wasn't her kitchen good enough...I won't go on but beware.
You may end up with outlaws.

My first thought when seeing this post was - STOP! It depends on the relationship you have with your fiancees parents, and I understand that grunge can be more than a little off-putting, but I really don't think this is a good idea. Of course, if you want to test the relationship this is one way to go about it, but you have to think what's more important - cleanliness or people's feelings? I know which one I'd choose.
