Taunton

Going to a wedding in Taunton and staying overnight. Is there any nice/interesting places to visit? We will not have our car as we will be travelling by train so it would have to be places fairly near the town.
Thanks.

I find Taunton a bit dreary - I'd catch a train to Exeter which is a much more interesting place.

Thanks for your reply. However we will only have a few hours spare so that's why I want to know about Tauton.

Interesting places to go in Taunton:

    erm.....

    mmm....

Sorry, I'm stuck on that one. :D There are lots of things in the area, but nothing in the town itself.

It has a pretty decent high street shopping centre. None of this indoor megamall rubbish, just a proper high street with decent stores. I seem to remember a pretty decent little cafe near the bridge over the river on North Street. And the market / cattle market on Priory Bridge Road / Canal Road is sort of OK.

But otherwise I just think of Taunton as the place where my (too high) council tax gets paid to a bunch of good-for-nothing public sector fat cats.

    There's an Odeon cinema

but it's on the edge of the town - a bus ride out. There's a theatre in the town - The Brew House

You'll see the theatre on the left as you cross the bridge over the river as you walk from the station to the town.
I think there's a cricket museum at Somerset's ground if that's your kind of thing.
