FTB Needing everything
Subject to things going wrong as they can i shall finally be moving out of home and in to our first house with my girlfriend in May.
The house we are buying is a reposession so I assume that everything was probably cut off well before it went on sale. I would thing this gives us free range to choose whoever we want to provide our services.
Here is the problem however..as i have never lived away from home before i have no real idea of the water/gas/electric/telephone uses of a working young couple living in a two bed modern semi (built 2002)
Most comparison sites are only really accurate if you have data to work from whihc we do not...
Being mostly a lurker on this board i know that there are always phases and a 'best of the moment' company for ust about everything.
can anyone recommend who the companys i should be approaching are?

You don't get any choice with water, you just need to know who the local supplier is.
With a fixed line phone the only choice is BT or the local cble company if there is one.
When you move in take a reading of all your meters gas, electric, water if you've got one(might be in the street). May save arguments later.
There might be letters at the house from the suppliers.
The best fuel deals depend on where you are as there are regional differences.
Why not go on a comparison site and put in some sample figures say £15/month electric and £25/month gas. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Even if the properties gas & elec supply has been cut off the property will still have a registered supplier. It takes about 28 days to change supplier so you need to register with the original supplier first who will arrange for the supply to be reconnected and then you can change to whoever you wish. :j
You can find out who your electricity supplier is by phoning your local Mpas- the numbers are listed here-
http://www.good-energy.co.uk/contact/65_MPAS.html (sorry not sure how to do short links!)
You can find out who your Gas supplier is by ringing National Grid meter number helpline on 0870 608 1524. You will just need your address details for both numbers.
HTH on the gas & elec side.Debt at 1/5/09 £21,996 _pale_

We bought a reposession earlier this year, and I'd recommend it anyone! We changed suppliers of gas/elec when we moved in, but I pay £20 p/m elec and £25/m gas with British Gas, water rates are about £17 p/m ( were on a meter at my previous house). There's two of us and a cat living here, so bills aren't tooo bad. Only thing we find is we get a lot of mail for the previous owners and their tenants - sick of writing "Not known at this address" now!0

Sorry to hijack this thread. I'm an international student renting an apartment from a landlord who I believed recently purchased the flat, as I keep getting lots of mail for the previous owner too. Is it ok to just throw away the letters, or do I need to write "not known at this address" and after that who do I give it to? Not sure what's the standard practice...0 -

"not known at this address" and stick it in the mail box or give it to the postman.
You should get to recognise the obvious junk mail and bin it. - I mean recycle of course before the 'Green Police' can comment;)0 -

You can register the name of a previous tenant, as well as your own with the mailing preference service to reduce junk mail.
http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/mps_choosetype.html
Write not known at this address for any non-junk mail (bank statements, bills) and put in post box, or ask the landlord if they have a forwarding address.
Also register with the telephone preference service to reduce sales phone calls.
