Visa Debit

This might be a daft question but it's not as clear as it used to be. When an online store says it accepts Visa credit cards, does this mean I can use my debit card? Normally I'd imagine not but since they've blurred the boundries of it a little (the logos are exactly the same and it doesn't make much attempt to differentiate) I'm not entirely sure.

Yes you can, and it's always been that way. The only exception that sometimes comes up is Visa electron cards.

Ah fair enough. Cheers. I've only ever had Mastercards and Switch/Maestro so Visa's a little new to me.

Visa is Visa, the debit/credit doesn't matter as they conform to the Visa system so would always be treated as Visa first and foremost with the debit/credit element being useful for charging by the merchant.

In the case of online stores, they usually list cards as such:

    Visa
    Mastercard
    Amex
    Visa Debit
    Maestro
    Solo
    Electron

If, however they don't differentiate then they will show as follows:

    Visa
    Mastercard
    Amex

In which case Visa debit is a Visa and Maestro would be Mastercard.

The third scenario would show as:

    Visa
    Mastercard
    Amex
    Maestro
    Electron

In which case again, as you have a superceding card to the Electron you'd select Visa. Even if it had Visa Credit, its still the same function.

Visa changed their logo and decided to go like Aviva - One Aviva or One Visa! Basically, the Visa symbol does it all now so wherever you see the Visa symbol, you can use any Visa branded card.

What is the difference between visa debit and maetro? I used to have a maetro card and when hsbc changed my card (as it was nearly expired). They put me on visa instead.

yes mate - like the other 10 million customers as well.....

Visa is accepted in more places and offers better protection.

you got a leaflet with the card - read it!
