LPG Car Conversion I am very interested in getting my car converted to LPG but i was just wondoring that once you have had it installed, can it be removed and installed into another car (obviously by the professionals) as my current car is not the best of cars. however, if you could remove and refit to another car in the future and then i only pay labour costs then it may be worth the intial layout on the actual equipment

does anybody know the answer

Cheers

Yes you can have it fitted to one car and then removed and re-installed onto another but it would be a lot of hassle (and expense) to do so. Also with the price of LPG going up in the last budget the savings aren't what they were and it will take quite some time for the cost savings to pay for the installation.

I personally wouldn't bother on a car that sounds like it on it's last legs, i would just look to replace my current car with a newer one. Even then would go for diesel rather than petrol with LPG as it will be a lot less hassle with fewer potential problems.

But Diseal is lot more expensive the LPG at 45p a litre. even with increases in LPG, it still is alot cheaper than diseal.

Yes diesel is twice the price of LPG but it is also more efficient as well. By the time you've factored in £1500 worth of conversion i doubt it's any cheaper, the payback time of such conversions is often quite long.

Also think about the reliability, not only have you got all the normal possibile problems but also all the added ones of the conversion.

Your best bet is to get a factory converted car like a vectra, saab or volvo.

I have Two vw passats both on lpg both done in excess of 200.000 miles and i can honestly say that after driving diesel cars for 15 years i would now not drive anything else but LPG, the savings are fantastic ie 400 miles to £23 worth of LPG in a 2.O GL passat (M REG) and 430 to £23 worth of LPG in a 1.8 20V passat estate. most cars will run on LPG but some run better than others so choose the right car. if you would like any other advice on this subject Email me at ourplace@blueyonder.co.uk and i will send you my tel no, once you have lpg you will not drive anything else

Our last car was LPG converted and was well worth it. We only got the LPG conversion done when we bought a brand new car and because at that time OH was making a 120 mile daily round trip for work. It was the sheer annual milage that made the conversion worth it. The conversion was about £1200 and paid for itself within a year. We had the car 3 years (1999 - 2002) and saw more and more places start to sell LPG. We never had a problem getting hold of the stuff and there is always the option to run the car on petrol if you run out of LPG anyway. When we traded in the car for our next car the LPG conversion didn't affect the trade-in value (as long as conversion is done proffessionally) infact i would say we got a bit extra because fo the conversion. Only real downside was that we lost alot of boot space due to the conversion. However if you buy a car that has been factory converted to LPG then i have heard this isn't such a problem.

I'd definitely get a LPG car again without hesitation - especially if we ever did that kind of milage again.

Search on this forum for LPG and you will find other threads.

I had an LPG conversion on my V8 3.9 litre Land Rover Discovery. It made running the thing just about affordable. Fuel economy was down 10-15% but at less than half the cost it was worth it.

You don't say where you are in the country. If you are in the West Midlands or any of the western counties like Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset etc then you would do well to sign up with Countrywide Farmers who have a key/PIN operated LPG scheme where you get billed at the end of each month for the LPG you buy from any one of their many sites. It also saves you the hassle of shopping around for cheapest fuel because you pay the same price per litre for all the gas you use, regardless of which sites you buy it at. Plus their price is negotiable depending on how much you anticipate using.

My advice regarding the installation of LPG is to get it done by an LPGA approved installer. If you don't do this you will be refused cover by a lot of insurers. I would also suggest that a de-install / re-install might be a false economy as you would have to make good all the holes & other changes to the old car assuming you were selling it on. Also, most kits are vehicle specific so unless you were buying a newer version of the exact same vehicle you probably wouldn't be able to re-use the LPG system.
