Refused Insurance as second driver

Hi people
i was wondering if anyone could enlighten me of any reasons i would get refused insurance.
Here is my situation
For the last two years both me and my girlfriend have had individual policies on her car, we have only just learned that this is not aloud.
Yesterday Ensleigh gave me a quote for £500 to take out an insurance policy with them. After discovering my girlfriend already has a policy on the car they they told me i would need to go on her insurance.
When they went through the motions to get me a quote they refused to insure me as a named driver.
Why would a company give me a quote for my own policy but then refuse me as a named driver?
My girlfriend is 29 and has been driving for 2 years and i am 28 have been driving for 13 months both crash/claim free.

Not "refused insurance", but refused to quote you (you don't want to have been refused insurance!).
If you want to be a named driver you need to get the policyholder to add you to their policy.0 -
It could be like Quentin advises or alternatively her insurer may only accept female drivers, not like your occupation etc, Ensleigh are only a broker not an insurer.0

Hi thanks for your reply
My girlfriend did make the call to add me to her policy and she also has a policy through Ensleigh, that's why i didn't understand it.
Could it be because neither of us have been driving to long?0 -
The length of time you have been driving could be a reason for you not being quoted yes.0

It sounds like they can see it's cheaper for you to be a named driver on her policy than vice versa and perhaps they have reason to suspect you are the main driver.
Perhaps you could ask them to cancel her policy and insure you with her as the named driver?0 -
I could do that but then her insurance would be void if i had an accident because its her car and she is the main driver of the car, i only drive it at weekends as she uses her car for work every day.0

HI Gar,y,
It's an obvious question, but why doesn't your girlfrend ask Endsleigh why they won't quote?0 -
No its a sensible question!! we did ask them but the girl didn't know why!! she has sent it to some appeal panel and is getting back to us tomorrow.0
