Bank charges for going over my overdraft limit - please advise

Hello,

I bank with Alliance and Leicester, for the last few months I have gone over my agreed overdraft of £1000. I have tried to avoid this at every cost, but just couldn't find the money some days to prevent this.

During one month, I went over my overdraft limit, for about two days, on 6 different occasions. For each day that I go over my limit, I am being charged £5 - which I know doesn't sound much, but for those 12 days I was over my limit this month (2 days x 6 occasions), I have been charged £60. I was wondering if I could claim this back?

Any advice would be gratefully received....

Many thanks

Are you sure you've only been charged £60 total? If so, then keep quiet about it - many other banks would have charged hundreds for this.

I'm a bit concerned about you saying that you couldn't prevent going over your limit. You need to get a workable budget to avoid this happening, otherwise charges are just going to mount up.

I have the same problem, its the £5 a day charge that they dont charge untill the middle of the next month, so you cant budget for it. Or i cant, so then the next month its 20 £5 charges, and if you check you credit file Alliance will have put you as being 2 months in arrears on a credit agrement which completely screws your credit file up.

I have tried to challenge it but they wont budge

Thanks, that explains alot, I didn't realise that they wrote it on your credit file.... that shines some light on why I got refused a credit card for the first time in my life the other week..... I just wondered if there was anything on the legal side of things that would allow us to claim the money back....

How have you managed to avoid their £25 'payment review' fees?

What type of transactions created the unauthorised overdraft situations?

Yes you can reclaim them via the normal route. As a court has yet to rule on the legality of these charges then you can start the process today.

Thank-you staff member... I will add them to my claim :-) Has anyone ever tried to gain back this sort of charge (either a daily charge like mine or a one-off fee) for going over your agreed overdraft? I am claiming the fee incurred for having a direct debit returned - "payment review fee", but wasn't sure I could claim the first type mentioned above, as well.
