how to clean black hob grills on range oven

hi

sorry if i sound stupid but i cant think what they are called. I am in a rented house with a range cooker. I need to clean the black grill tjings on the top (you rest the saucepans on them). Have splash marks on them. Has anyone any tips on whats best to use. when we moved in they had one of those oven cleaning co in and the guy said they were very delicate and could only use soapy water - but that doesnt get rid of all the marks.
thanks

    Hi,

    They are called pan supports.

Are they rough mat finish cast iron or are they enamalled?

If cast iron then use some oil to rub into the surface so it all blackens down. If enamalled then any oven cleaner will do. We use Astonish, the paste, it seems to do a reasonable job.

Suggest that you put them in the bath (protect the bath surface with an old cloth to prevent scratches) and soak them in hot water and washing powder. Residue comes off easily then. We use sugar soap, this is sold as a diy product for cleaning grease, nicotine off paintwork etc and is excellent for removing cooking residue.
