I have this Ikea pine table & don't want it stained into the wood grain with ketchup , gravy etc. What can I paint it with to protect it from stains & look good?

In the care instructions given for this item on Ikea's site it saysCan be treated with oil, wax, lacquer or glazing paint for higher resistance and easy care.
I would be looking at an oil or wax. See if Osmo do one for furniture, we've used Osmo PolyX oil for our wood veneer doors, easy as pie to apply, brush on, wipe with cloth. Forms a hard wax finish that can be wiped over. Not sure if it's suitable for a table but you could ask.
Who's likely to be spilling ketchup, gravy etc. on it? Kids? If so, when the kids are at the table why not use a table cloth? You can always use it table cloth-less when more careful adults only are at the table.0 -

Is yatch varnish "lacquer or glazing paint"?“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson

I don't know HappySad. What sort of a finish do you want? High glaze/shiney, matt, satin? I would think yacht varnish would give a very glossy finish, I think we used it on a wooden door number plaque many years ago and it was very very shiney. I'd either go to my local decorating store (ours has a good range of stains/waxes/finishes) and ask their advice or I'd ring Ikea and see if they can make it a bit clearer.0 -
Any sort of varnish will protect it, and you can get gloss and matt varieties these days. Yacht Varnish is very good, it's very tough and will resist most things. It tends to be very high gloss, which you may or may not find attractive, but in terms of protection it's one of the best.
The other alternative is a wax. You can get paintable waxes, but on our table we just use a tin of normal wax that you rub on with a cloth - it's about the consistency of shoe polish and very easy to apply. This will help prevent spills soaking into the wood, but it's not quite as resiliant as a varnish will be. But you can get many different colours ( plain, oak, beech, etc ) and you just need to re-apply it every so often.0
