Hi , really sorry if this is covered in sticky, i tried reading but could not make head nor tail of it as i have a wireless talktalk head smash!!

Trying to get a straight answer off talktalk but they have confused me totally.

First of all , i need to go wireless as my child is getting a laptop from school so she needs to connect it to our Internet.

I currently have a smart ex modem from talktalk, about 3 years old and not wireless.

Do i need to buy a new modem and router or just a router, i have no wireless knowledge what so ever...

Do i need to buy a talktalk modem/router or will any be compatible?

Thanks for reading, i have read the sticky a few times but dont know where to start. cheers

ring up talktalk and tell them you are leaving them, when they ask why, tell them other broadband suppliers give you a free wireless router, without a shadow of a doubt they will offer to give you a free wireless router and maybe knock a couple of quid off your monthly bill as well
If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

All you need is a wireless ADSL router (not a cable router), something like a Netgear DG834G. If you can't get one off TalkTalk, you can get one on eBay for £20.
Remember that you only need a wireless link if she is going to use the laptop remotely from the router. If not then use an ethernet connection, which is faster, more stable and much more secure. If you use wireless make sure you set it up properly using WPA encryption, not WEP.
If your existing modem is an old TT USB Speedtouch modem, this is no use for a wireless connection.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

...assuming you're not tied in to a TalkTalk contract!
