Well actually no, espresso, some of the photos that were taken over a metre away were not in focus either. The camera is totally unreliable and not at all suitable for my needs - I already knew that before I started this thread. I originally posted to ask for advice to help me choose the next camera (I no longer have the time to spend hours researching before buying, as I used to do pre-baby). I am very grateful for all the helpful advice that has been given to me by many posters.

Thanks Donnie for the advice about a digital camcorder - yes, we've already got one and record loads of footage. Managed to get lots of her 'milestones' on it, so all is not lost with the fuzzy photos!

The pentax I bought from staples had a focusing error. It was just hit and miss and you couldnt tell until viewing them fullscreen.

and that was from a brand new camera costing me about £230.

I could of cried at the time. I left it till the last minute before my 2nd baby was born. And this time I was not missing out on photos!!

I got that pentax from staples on a HUGE recommendation. Lovely little camera to look at, big 2.5' low heat screen (ate the batteries like no 2mrw) and it produced 18/20 blurry shots.

Took it back and asked for refund, didnt want to give me it as there was nothing wrong with the camera (my old 2.1MP produced better pics) but he wouldnt attach it to a p.c so I couldnt show him the fault.

He then tried to sell me a HP camera for the next 45mins, I'd just done 2-3 weeks of research and what he was telling me was complete TURD!

Told him wouldnt touch a HP with my old mans walking stick.....so finally got full refund. Then went to a proper camera shop in Halifax (Janet Grenes) and basically asked to 'try' them before I paid, very helpful. Attached the cameras to a p.c so i could see the end result. Wish I'd of just done that now instead of going to places like Jessops, Staples.

I can thoroughly recommend the Nikon Coolpix range. Hunt around and you get some good prices. I have one and I love the fact that it as well as the automatic mode they have plenty of manual settings to allow you to get the picture you want. The build quality is great and they are small enough to easily carry around without being obtrusive.
