wallpaper over basecoat?

recently i removed all the wallpaper from 2 rooms. the plan was to prepare the walls for new wallpaper, but after several arguements over wallpaper vs paint  i got fed up and painted walls in wickes basecoat ready to be painted with suitable top coat.

the thing is after i cooled down (and after i painted both rooms ) i realised i really wanted paper!!!!

so my question is, is it okay to wallpaper over basecoat?
i assume i'd have to lightly sand but is that all i'll have to do?

any advice would be appreciated

if the walls are smooth , just give them a coat of thinned paste - size and then you should have no probs

When you say basecoat, do mean like a cheapo undercoat before you apply the good Paint?

If so, yes, infact the paint will have acted like a size, so your paper should go on more easier.

I would still give your walls a light size the night before, just knock up some watery paste, and I mean watery/runny, put that on the walls,( this will give you a bit extra leeway to hang your paper, specially in this weather, as the paper dries out too quick.
The next day when you come to paper, just paste the paper as you would normally, read the instructions, as I would expect each length has to soak before you hang, this is one of the most comon problems people have, they forget to soak their lengths, and the next day, thier paper has shrunk, and they are left with gaps.

    thanks for your quick responses

the base coat is wickes own brand, ive used it before and it gives a good base for paint but i was just worried it would cause problems under paper.

i will paste the night before and hopefully it will be smooth sailing.
its the first time i've ever wallpapered a room myself so was concerned i'd just be making a bigger mess for myself

i was thinking a lightly embossed paper that can be painted

i don't like painted walls as they seem cold to the touch (plus not great unless walls are flawless)

we had lightly embossed in our previous house and it gave the walls a softer look as opposed to plain paper.....well thats what i thought i could be totally off the mark
