We have caller display, we only answer if it is someone we know otherwise we let the answerphone take any messages, if it is a genuine call or important they usually start to leave a message and we can always interrupt the answerphone and take the call.

If it is from a foreign call centre it always shows as an 'International Call', or if it is number withheld as 'Unavailable' and you know it is a cold call as they never leave a message.

As will a call from anyone using 1899, 18185 or 18866 - so an international call won't necessarily be a cold caller.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Fair enough, but then hopefully they would start to leave a message and we can then take the call.:D

I keep getting out of area calls, where as soon as you say hello, they say something like "I understand you are paying by direct debit to British Gas (or sometimes they say a different company) every month". I didn't used to answer but with 4 or 5 calls a day disturbing my peace/sleep/reading time/quiet time, I thought maybe I could answer and tell them to stop phoning. The worst thing is they phone and sometimes just say hi, how are you, before introducing themselves. I tell them I'm with TPS but of course, out of area suggests they're phoning from abroad.

I'm thinking of buying a cheap kid's whistle and just blowing down the phone into it when I get an out of area call. But I fear I'd get into trouble for a noise assault. Not sure if I would though, as technically I'm not necessarily directing it at the caller, I might just be happening to be blowing a whistle near the phone at the same time I answer it. Sounds stupid I know, but they're harassing me, so I dont see why I can't get my own back.

Two things callls from outside the UK are outside the Tel preference service, and automated calls using "Random" numbers are also permitted I believe.

I get troubled too (and I am in the business, but we dont call homeowners this way)

BEST advice, when asked if youd like DG, timeshare, kitchen etc, just say, "how interesting, I'm in that business too, perhaps we can talk?".......they hang up instantly!

Buying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run.
