Replacing touchpad on Dell Inspiron Laptop?

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the touchpad on a dell inspiron 1501 laptop?

And if it is, how much would I be looking at paying for someone to do it for me?

My touchpad is no longer recognising when I tap to click, but it is still working apart from this at the moment, although I am worried the rest might go too. The laptop is out of warranty and Dell wont even tell me what the problem is unless I pay a fee to talk to someone in an overseas call centre!

Check on the Dell website for a workshop manual for your laptop then you will see if you can take it apart, sometimes the touchpad is part of the plastic casing so you may have to buy the complete section. The manual should give you the part number then do a search on line or on ebay for the part.

Have you checked the touchpad settings to see if 'tap for click' has been turned off? Vista has a funny habit of changing them for no reason. I normally turn this feature off but several times it has come on again on its own.
