I used to drive for a car rental company picking up damaged cars from all over the country, and by far the best car fuel wise was the diesel version of the mondeo, the manual verion from about 4/5 years ago was a bit sharp with the clutch, we always used to pull off in 2nd, which really aint a problem with a diesel, but the auto is defo the better choice. Ive actually picked a car up in Hollyhead with a full tank drove it back to Birmingham and its only used approx one eigth of a tank of fuel. HTH

    Eighth tank 1.5 - 2 gallons for 175 miles - 80+ mpg. Never.

I expect an auto diesel Mondeo to do mid forties on a good run, 30ish round town. Petrol 20s round town, possibly 40 on a run, unless you go for a V6!

Its approx 147 miles, from where i picked the car up and dropped it off, and because it was a hire car the branch we picked it up from had to make sure the tank was as full as you could physically get it, so i except you are taking the size as the tank only, in the cars we drove the cars had to be filled up to the filler cap, as once they where repaired we might of had to take them elsewhere in the country. And as we where in no rush we just used to do 57 and stick it in cruise control. Ive no reason to lie, im just sharing my observations

expect to be surprised then, i used fiances dads vectra a few weeks ago, diesel automatic, took it on a long run done 400 miles in it and used up £34 of diesel, the tank was necked before we left then when we returned we necked the tank again and put in exactly £34 at 102.9 p per litre. if you do the maths that works out at close to 60 mpg,to say i was impressed was an under statement,it was pretty fast aswell, and we werent doddling along,we done most of the journey at 80 mph. im sure if we went a bit slower we could have got even better economy from the vectra, i doubt 80 mpg would be possible in it though.

my 1.6 petrol focus does mid 40's on a long run so a diesel mondeo should be getting better figures than what you expect, auto or not.
