People who struggle to give an answer amaze me, when I am invited to a wedding I don't hold on to it and see if a better offer comes up.
If the people who were getting married aren't that important to me then I wouldnt go and say no from the off, after all attending a wedding isnt cheap.
If something big is on the horizon you tend to know about it well in advance to be able to make the decision about what to attend[/QUOTE]

This is really infuriating me too, those one or two relatives who make you promise not to forget them off the 'main' list when the big day arrives are showing to be the worst offenders for not replying.

We sent our invites out at the end of april as we have been given a choice menu instead of set menu at the hotel because we didnt meat minimum number criteria providing we can give definite numbers 8 weeks prior to the day. It has caused some very heated "conversations" between me and OH because he sees it as badgering them in to agreeing to come when they dont want to or even making them feel uncomfortable in deciding a menu when they may not want a particular item on said day.

My sister has refused to come to the wedding as her husband cant (wont and i know its a wont cos of a slip up in a recent conversation) have time off work and cant possibly go on her own with her children, this is slightly hurtful that she feels she wont be a part of my day but i also respect her decision - families hey who would have 'em? lol.
