it is dell pc he prob has back up disk does he just put in back up disk and reinstall the whole of windows or is there a repeir for this

lks like the XP CD is the only route

newer dells have a restore partition hidden away that sets it back to default, use a Linux CD like Ubuntu to get any docs/photo's off first

if it's vista then there is a repair CD you can download
