Realistic Haggling
Afternoon all
I'm looking for a used car, and have a budget of £3000 including an old car I have to part exchange which is worth about £400... If I'm lucky.
I'm trying to work out what cars I can realistically haggle down to my budget. I'm not expecting to get a 5K for 3, but I would like a fair price. Maybe 3950?

Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

Look at it the other way, would you take £300 for your car. At £3950 you are asking for 25% off, worth a try but a bit of a punt I reckon.
I's be looking more at £3500It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
That's what I thought. Thank you for responding Reggie Rebel (I love the name)Getting there... A deal at a time. :T0

would a car worth £400 not likely qualify for scrappage0

Don't part/ex, you get far more money selling privately!
I just bought a new (used) car, and they can't really budge a huge amount on the car - what you can negotiate though is things like warranty, RTI, breakdown etc etc.
My car was advertised at 6900, got it down to 6700, and then £1200 of freebies!0 -
Thank you for the response. The car isn't 10 years old yet, and surprisingly the dealer ship I went to today said she'd take my car for about a grand.
So haggling for extras is better than trying to get the price down. I'll keep that in mind.Getting there... A deal at a time. :T0 -
The price you get for your car can change depending on the car you are buying and how much profit is in it etc.:D:beer: Am thinking of a new one:beer:0

It depends where you buy the car from. Some garages or dealerships price there cars low to get people in the door, once in they discount very little from the sticker price. Others have higher sticker prices but are willing to discount a lot more so the buyer feels he is getting more of a bargain.
In general I would say look around at sticker prices in garages around your area, work out which is the lowest for that year and knock a couple of hundred off that.
Selling privately would make more sense though, I'd be looking for £200 off the sticker price minimum without a trade in. If they give you £400 for your car in a trade in then in real terms they are only giving you £200. The government incentive only applies to new cars in any case and you'd be hard pushed to find one of them in budget......0
