Post Office card help!!

Hi all,
Had money problems back in 2000, but have basically been debt free for 7+ years.
Ran with a basic Nationwide flex account, which they wouldn't upgrade, but it did the job.
Last year, took the bull by the horns and approached Nat West, who offered a full account, with cheque book, debit card and overdraft!!!
Approached Vanquis, who gave me a card albeit with a small limit.
Now having paid Vanquis ontime, every month, thought that they'd increase limit, but when I rang them they said it's done on an "as and when" electronic basis.
So after doing some research, applied for the Post Office card as it fitted what I was looking for.
Went through online application procedure, was told they'd be in touch by post, which I'm led to believe is not uncommon.
Nothing came, so last week rang them and they said it had been declined and letter had been sent out to this effect. I've appealed this and they are writing to me.
Signed up for the Equifax free trial and it seems I have 2 accounts with a "home shopping" company.
Now my wife applied for one of these, bought one item through them and paid it off in full.
These two accounts are active, with balances of £260 and £600 and both have a default against them.
Have been in touch with the company concerned and they have frozen these accounts and passed them on to their fraud department, but I've been told that this could take a number of months to clear this from my file.
Is this
a) correct
and
b) Is there anything I can do to sort my file out and spedd this process up?
I applied for the PO card, as it offered the best terms for using in Europe, for a family holiday at the start of October.
Any help and info on sorting this out would be very, very appreciated.
Cheers

Send this to them - its a prove it letter:Dear Sir/Madam
Ref: xxxxxxxxxxx
I note on my credit reports, the above numbered account and a default registered against it, however I have no knowledge of any such account nor of any debt being owed to you.
I am familiar with the ‘Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance’ which states that it is unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question. It also states that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable. This also extends to processing data about the wrong data subject.
I would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above accounts unless you can provide evidence as to my liability for the debt in question and in the meantime remove all data regards to these accounts, with all three credit reference agencies, immediately.
I await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed, with all data removed from my credit file(s) within the next 14 days before complaining to the trading standards department and consider informing the OFT of your actions.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully
With respect to the PO card, don't worry cos you can still reappeal after your credit files are sorted.... can you name and shame the companies involved please...?2010 - year of the troll

there has been some movement on this on my equifax file, seems like they are doing what they said, but if it isn't sorted by this time next week, I'll send 'em your letter.
Post Office have asked for copy of passport, copy of bank statement and copy of council tax bill, to process the appeal. I've done a letter to go with this, together with copy of Equifax report, showing the accounts that are in dispute - and one of them is now marked "in dispute".
Shop direct finance are the ones who've opened accounts.
Next Direct have credit checked but declined the account, as whoever tried to open it, couldn't give them our landline number.Capital one £200 - bal nil. Aqua £350 - bal nil
