Re nationalisation of the East Coast rail

I shall not say that re-nationalisation might not be a good idea, because I believe that it may, but can we de-bunk this myth yet again that you can quote like for like between rail and air fares please.
Does the plane you're on land right in the centre of London??
OK, there are flights into City airport, but realistically - air travel is very rarely city centre to city centre is it?
Rail travel almost always is and those journeys from airport to city are not free, nor do they not take further time.
This might seem flippant to some, but finally, if I'm travelling from London to Edinburgh, I might be a bit annoyed because I've been inconvenienced, but don't mind changing trains at York because of a mechanical failure, although I'm not sure I'd be happy about dealing with the same thing at 10,000 feet.
All of our lives is about making choices.
What about if time is money?
If i fly into Heathrow i do exactly the same as if i get the train into Kings Cross - I get the underground.
I can fly to London and back with a day from anywhere in the British isles and still get home for my dinner after a 2 hour meeting and Lunch in the Big Smoke.
Still, if you would rather sit for 4 hours (or whatever it is) from London to Edinburgh then that's fine. Ill be there in an hour or so.
Your comments about mechanical failure are ironic really, particularly since there hasn't been a fatality on the entire Domestic or indeed International network of any British airline since the 1980's. (Due to accident)
There have been multiple fatalities on the British Rail Network within the time since the 1980's.
It is obviously safer to fly.0 -

But you won't. Obviously depends on where you are actually going but city centre to city centre should work out faster and much less hassle on the train. But if you are travelling from outside the cities then the plane would probably be my first choice.
I booked a ticket for my son yestrday Norwich to Glasgow on the train. He is not impressed and wanted to fly but since flybe only fly direct to Edinburgh now and i'm in the West he was onto plums. But when flybe flew to Glasgow it was an absolute godsend, normally cheaper than the train and on that route much faster.0 -

If time is money, why on earth would you get the underground to central London when the Heathrow Express takes a third of the time?I can fly to London and back with a day from anywhere in the British isles and still get home for my dinner after a 2 hour meeting and Lunch in the Big Smoke.Still, if you would rather sit for 4 hours (or whatever it is) from London to Edinburgh then that's fine. 1983 - A BA helicopter crashes killing 20.
1985 - A British Airtours flight engine catches fire on takeoff killing 53
1986 - A British International Helicopter crashed killing 45
Now, lets look at rail, once again, excluding terrorist activity.

I make rail 142 against airs 118 which ONLY includes British carriers, not foreign carriers operating out of British airports. Therefore, that excludes 270 air deaths at Lockerbie.
Add on foreign carriers operating from British airports (still excluding Lockerbie) and air has many more deaths than rail.
Now think about how many more rail services run each day in the UK compared to how many flights there are. I will start you off - My local rail company operates just under 2,500 services per DAY.
So, my question to you is are you still sticking by the statement of "It is obviously safer to fly"?0 -
Its when i read posts like the one you just wrote Rob that i feel sorry for people like yourself. And i genuinely mean that
Any post that starts like that isn't worth reading, so I didn't. I will just assume that it is full of petty insults to try and make you look clever and me stupid when in reality to anyone else it makes you look stupid for being do agressive with your opinion.0 -
Do you people honestly have nothing better to do on this warm sunny afternoon other than bickering with complete strangers in front of your computers?0
