We have a brand new carpet, and are having some functions with loads of people in the house, and don’t want the new carpet to get ruined/dirty in that room, so need some sort of DIY attractive cover for the carpet, which can be walked on aswell.

I don’t want white sheets, which people would trip up on, but something we can buy from homebase/B$Q? - some form of covers, which can be walked on...

any suggestions? (it has to be fairly hard, to cover the whole carpet, or we can get it in 3-4 parts and overlap it

hi im a plumber for a housing mantinence company we always have to protect the houses which we work in and we still have to be safe as big dust sheets can be dangerous without a drink down you anyway we have rolls of this stuff i dont know the name of it all i can describe it as is a massiveroll of cling film its great it sticks well and doesnt move when walked on and its suprisingly strong you can put it anywere even up the stairs sorry havent got a name for it but im sure your local builders merchant will have some

I think Skinback is referring to a Carpet Protector. They well them at ScrewFix for about £5 per roll. It comes in a roll like clingfilm. It is slightly tacky so you lay it on the carpet and it just stays there. You can lay it overlapping and create a fairly good water resistant surface that will stand up to a bit of food and wine falling onto it.

If you imagine the protective covering you get on stainless steel appliances when new and think of it on your carpet :-)

I seem to remember that it is called something like "carpet" :-)

The only alternative I could think of would be to tape down some dust sheets nice and flat with wide masking tape. No tripping hazard then.

If you want to make it less obtrusive then you could always run the dustsheet through the washing machine with some fabric dye.

We use the same plastic sheet that sign writers use but thinner,
Its called Corex and is similar to corrugated cardboard exept in plastic. 8x4 sheets are about £4.90 at Selco (may have to order it) or find a sign writers and get him to order 2-3mm thick in what ever colour you want. Can be cut with a stanley or scissors, double sided tape to stick together and Bobs ur aunty.
ps we spray wall coating cenent and plaster inside, at it works well, much safer that polythene and great with baby oil.. oops what a giveaway.:p

We use this stuff at work - its works really well - but there are different versions for carpet and hardflooring - and it isn't slippy! ps don't buy it from the link but it will give you a start!

What about some big rugs from Ikea. They could then be used again, or if they are in fair condition after you could put them on ebay!

Your options seem to be to cover the carpet, or avoid the dirt getting there in the first place.
For the first, plastic will look awful, as will dustsheets. Sounds like a few fun rugs from Ikea would work... (or maybe even tatami mats if you can get away with a Japanese style.)

Personally I'd make sure of having lots of mats for people to wipe their feet on the way in - they're not going to tread in dirt on purpose.

    What colour are your carpets?
