bathroom sealant tragedy

I have never sealed anything but watched my partner do it many times
My advice is when you do around the bath, fill it with water first as it drops slightly, if you don't, when you get into the bath the first time after sealing it, it will pull away from the wall/bath

Sounds like a real bodged-job and the cowboy has used loads of sealant to hide the worst of it. If that's all wrong, chances are plenty else will be too.0 -
It might well be a bodged job, but it is not a bathroom sealant tragedy as your thread title would suggest. Inconvenience and having to get the job redone is an annoyance, not a tragedy. Exaggeration is not really helpful when looking for answers.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Oh come on Col,:D its a tragedy to maza, she has spent a small fortune on getting it done, and the sealant has let it down, and the thing is, everytime she goes in the bathroom her eye is drawn to it.
If it happened to me, I would be going mad , as its the finishing touches that makes the job.
BTW Maza, when you do decide to do the sealant yourself, like the OP says, 'wet finger and smooth', add a bit of fairy liquid into the water, that way the sealant wont stick to your fingers, and much easier to smooth out.0 -
Hi also heard that a lolly stick works well?0

I can understand this. A clown did a similar job on my parents shower. They had paid out a lot of money for shower panels, glass shower door, nice tray, etc etc and the idiot ruined it with bodged sealant finish which he seemed to get absolutely everywhere - it detracted from the whole job and looked horrible. Needless to say, I had to strip it out and redo the whole lot properly. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

The 'secret' to silicone sealing is having the nozzle as small as possible, apply pressure to the gun and keep it moving, then lift it off at the end all in one smooth motion.
A wet finger and lightly rub along the seal, just barely touch it, you don't need any masking tape or owt like that.
The most common mistake is applying a bead thats too thick (like the plumber in this saga) so its impossible to get a thin/neat finish. In wood we trust.0
