hi just have a look around see if any building work has been done or any new fences have been put up this is the usual case the posts go right through the drains unnoticed then just cemented in
if it is a collapsed drain u will have to dig it up if you wanted to diy you can buy 2 super sleve sockets which are like 2 rubber sleaves with big jubilee clips and just join them with clay pipe these are slip sockets so should be quite easy
just be aware drain cameras are quite expensive

Check your insurance, accidental damage to drains should be covered as should damage due to subsidence.

My soil pipe started leaking earlier this year, and the insurer dealt with it no problem. Yes I had to pay an excess, but it was a lot cheaper than doing the work. The insurer was Direct Line

thanks, but i think the servey i had done did say in there report that there is possible broken/faulty drainage,i forwarded the report to my insurers so they could quote me for my policy,so i doubt they would cough up as the problem was there before i purchased the place

You need to speak to your water company!

Any house built before 1936 with shared drains is maintainable at the water company's expense.

Fingers crossed that yours was built before!

If you don't know when the house was built, ask your solicitor, it should be on the land certificate with the Land Registry Deeds

I've previously owned a house that it applied to. After 1936 anything on the property owner's land that isn't a main sewer is their own responsibilty.
