New laptop sound problem ?

A friend just bought a Compaq laptop from PCWorld on Sunday (£379, good specs) and today I opened it for the first time to install some stuff .... and ....
I can't hear out of the internal speakers but I can hear the sound in the headphones. I checked device manager but there are no driver conflicts on sound devices.

Should we take it back? is it something simple that I don't know?

Try this. Right click on the Volume icon in the bottom corner and click "Playback Devices". It probably come up with multiple devices. If theres one called "Speakers" try setting that as default and then try.

Also right click on the each device and click test , the one that makes the sound is the one you want

Yes. you have either a 14 day / 30day return poilicy as the item is faulty (just remember to wipe (using software) you files you have added) you also have 1 years warrenty and if you took out extended warrenty.

Whats The Model No. to the Compaq presario

When you say you opened it up to install some stuff are you talking about a hardware installation in which case it may just be a dislodged connector or do you mean you installed some software?

If the software was media related it may have tinkered with your default audio settings in which case consult the help files for that application.
It will probably direct you to an options menu where you can change your defaults to your preferences.

Is it muted? Laptops usually have a control if you on the the function key "Fn" and then one of the F keys or escape has a little icon for muting and un-muting.

Something usually appears on screen to tell you what mode it is in.
