The stumps will last for years in the ground. If you can, do the job properly and take them out now. Cut back the trunk to about 4' in height, dig round the base to expose the roots, use the stump as a lever to break the small ones and cut through the big roots. You'll be able to remove the bulk of roots this way and then you won't spend forever trying to garden around the stumps.

Obviously a better option, but they did say they weren't into gardening so may be a step too far!! I do agree better to do it properly if you can (I won't be i'll admit but we have enough room not to have to!)
  • Hello all, thanks for your fantastic advice :)

We decided in the end to have him cut down the outer two trees and prune the middle two. We didn't have the stumps taken out as the bank that the trees are on is quite delicate, and messing around there would potentially cause the remaining trees to fall. Plus my partner liked the idea of tree stumps!

I paid the guy £75 - it took him and another guy about an hour, so I don't think they were ripping us off (equipment provision, insurance, disposal, etc. on top of wages); it's not the neatest job in the world, but he took away all waste, and now I don't need to do anything with the trees myself!

And no, I won't be dealing with cold-callers again :o
  • well said tree contractor. if only the public could be in our shoes for a while
  • Hi

I am a tree surgeon in Brighton. I charge £70-80 per hour for 2 men. It is difficult to judge if your quote is decent or not as there are so many variables in tree work. How long is the drag from the trees to the woodchipper? have you got side access? are there any plants, flowers or green house's near the trees that could be damaged? have the contractors got insurance? You probably could get a cheaper quote but how would they leave your trees looking? My advice would be to get 3 quotes with one of them being an AA (Arboricultural Association) Approved contractor (List on their website). Good luck

Why in Gods name are you commenting on a post that is 5 years old/ The OP has no doubt had the work done. Or are you just gearing up for throwing tins of spam at us?

  • We recently had some trees lopped at our house in Brighton so I thought I'd see if I could add to this discussion.

We have several large (as tall as a house) Sycamores in the front and back garden and they block all the light from our kitchen and lounge. We phoned a few local tree loppers and they told us that it's really impossible to give a price to remove a tree without seeing it first.

I would suggest getting a professional to come round and discuss your requirements, they normally do it for free.

We ended up using a really good local (Brighton) company called Arbor Cura Tree Surgery because they were so helpful and knowledgeable. But most of the companies we spoke to seemed happy to discuss our tree issues, they all seem to love the job (you wouldn't catch me swinging around in a tree carrying a chainsaw!!).
