card caught in a cash point

hello,

about 10 days ago my card was caught in a cash point and the card was then extracted from the machine and over 826 pounds was taken from my account via chip and pin.

obviously ive been in contact with my bank, abbey. they say the matter is under investigation by the fraud team; so i am basically waiting for a decision on behalf of them.

i was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem?

Please say you cancelled your card? I would advise anyone to cancel their card even if it is captured in a cash machine.

That is weird then that transactions were made on a cancelled card. Have you been given the details of the transactions and the times they were made?
That is very odd, cos most banks cancel the card immediately you ring up to prevent any unauthorised useage. Hmmm, might be worth asking the bank when they cancelled the card as well.

This is known as "strapping"

It works on a similar basis to skimming (camera in place too) BUT it retains the card to make it look like the ATM is swallowing the card for some reason.

When you call to cancel the card because the bank believes the card has been retained by the machine - they keep the same profile for the replacement card.

Meaning that the card that has been trapped in the ATM is completely usable and they also have the PIN number.

Try proving that one in a dispute!

wait your not understanding.

this is how it happened:

1) card is eaten by cash point

at this point i assumed the machine had just swallowed my card and i was out and thought ok, ill ring the bank for a new card in the morning

2) contact bank and find that my card was actually retrieved from the machine by some sort of criminal who then used my card . my card is cancelled at this point

I understand fully - even if you called immediately the original card would still be usable by the fraudsters.

I was trying to warn people who get into a similar situation.

Either way the same technique applies as skimming.

Ouch, sounds to me perhaps as though there was a device on the machine that either (a) captured details of the card and card was cloned or (b) card wasn't eaten in the machine and pin number recorded(device in machine).
Reason is staff do not have access to pin numbers so wouldn;t be able to use the card without it.
Next time cancel it immediately.

i was told that i should get the money back because of the way the card was taken from me. any ideas?

Yes, it happened to my dad last Christmas. He's 72 and didn't have a clue.
He had to go through their statements and tick off transactions that weren't his.
It took a month or so but they did get their money back.
Good luck mate, what a thing to happen.
Best thing is always get cash from the supermarket, buy some shopping and get cashback when you pay for it.
I won't use ATM's now if I can help it........
