My DH is a pest controller and has confirmed that house flies (fannia canicularis ?) isnt attracted to UV fly killers. Apparently if you grow certain things in pots or baskets by the windows it deters them. Tansy (growing), Nettle (crushed leaves), Mint (crushed leaves) and Lemon balm (growing) are all said to deter flies.

    Use one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HGX-Electric-Fly-Swat,-Flying-Insect-Killer-inc-Batts!_W0QQitemZ260422703757QQcmdZViewItem

Basically an electrified mini tennis racket, absolutely brilliant piece of kit. Ok, it involves hunting the things down, but it allows you to zap them mid-flight or when they've settled on a surface and really works. I don't know what I'd do without mine now, really cheap at £5-£7 too.

Seeing the little gits with arcs of electricity zapping their antennas gives a level of satisfaction I can't describe.

They had these in my local poundland.

I must confess to getting a little satisfaction from sneaking up on them and sucking them up with the vacuum cleaner hose. It is an acquired skill, you have to be stealthy and very careful,.
The hose elimination method is most effective if you let the creature come to rest then approach it from directly in front. Any sudden movement will result in it flying away, and if you listen carefully after failing a few times you can hear them laughing at your incompetence.
However with practice you will prevail, good hunting.
