Ultraviolet Fly Killers - Do they work? Is there science behind this?

I did a forum search and found one related post.
So I thought I'd ask here. Are those UV Fly killers (not the plug ones) any good? In the evening the only way to cool the bedroom/hallway/bathroom down is to open all the windows and I end up with about twenty to thirty flies buzzing around.
I have tried Glue traps, Fly paper and swearing.

Anyone used them what should I look for? Is there science behind this?

Thanks

P.S No I can't put fly screens up on these windows.

In my experience, whilst they work for some insects many do not seem to be attracted to the UV. This is especially true of the house fly/bottle fly.

Remember also that if you do leave the windows open and put out something that attracts flies then maybe you will have more visitor than you otherwise might.......

I completely sympathise with you lilibeth.

We've got baby seagulls outside our windows and the neighbours are feeding them tinned dog food - which means we are getting tons of flies in through the window.

Thinknig of buying sticky paper but not sure what will work best

It is specifically house flies I want to target.
So are you saying that it definitely won't work for them then?

Got seagulls all around us and next door is a pigeon breeding centre.
Sticky paper did not work for us.

You could try getting a dog!:D Ours is VERY good at catching flies! Great, if you don't mind being trampled half to death by a stampeeding hound that bounces off walls & windows trying to catch the bloomin things!:rotfl:

Not in my experience. Sadly we get loads too and I hardly ever hear a "pfitz" caused by a house fly.

    Use one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HGX-Electric-Fly-Swat,-Flying-Insect-Killer-inc-Batts!_W0QQitemZ260422703757QQcmdZViewItem

Basically an electrified mini tennis racket, absolutely brilliant piece of kit. Ok, it involves hunting the things down, but it allows you to zap them mid-flight or when they've settled on a surface and really works. I don't know what I'd do without mine now, really cheap at £5-£7 too.

Seeing the little gits with arcs of electricity zapping their antennas gives a level of satisfaction I can't describe.
