It is a colonial culture and it is not to show grattitude but to give a good posh feeling to the giver. All the above already charged you for the service they provided and if they are employees the employer is aready paying them for what they do.

My Dad used to make us work out 12.5 % of the restaurant bill as kids. I always dreaded that moment as mental arithmetic was never my strong point!
I can finally do it now though, half, half, half again, but hes not around to realise that at nearly 50 I can do my sums!
My OH is usually too generous in my estimation at 10%.Norn Iron Club member 4730 -

Interestingly, my hairdresser told me that she hadn't put her prices up for 4 years and daren't do it now. My last hairdresser put her prices up by 30% a year ago and like most of her customers, I voted with my feet.0 -

Hi Have enjoyed this thread, where can I send the tip?:)
I always tip my hairdresser, as she is a very good one and is warm and friendly and I always feel better and pampered when I leave her, and at Christmas too, she deserves it. I rarely use taxis, but I feel they charge a lot even for a short journey, so would never tip. When we are in a cafe never, but when we eat at a fav of ours we always tip as the food is very tasty and the service is good too.We would tip for a very good meal and the good service in a restaurant. I too hate to think a greedy owner would keep tips when it is hard working good staff who has earned them. That is not nice!!!!!Do a little kindness every day.;)0
