Washing machine not working...

Options
Hi All!

Ask me about cars & vans & vehicles & I'll tell you loads stuff!!

Washing machines that all the lights work & let you put laundry into, then start making a pumping noise & do nothing more & I'm stuck!!!

OK, girlfriends got a 2 year old Hotpoint machine & it does no more than what I just mentioned!!

Where do I start messing about to try & fix it. Before resorting to the £99 call out from Hotpoint, please?

& I have yet to check, but do they still have 5year parts warranty - so we only pay a call out fee, assuming it is a fault, rather than her doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance!

VB

Not quite sure I understand the problem, but a couple of simple things to check are the inlet and drain hoses. Check that they're not kinked ( it's easy to kink them if you've slid it under a worktop ). The inlet hose also usually has a little filter on it where it screws into the back of the machine - unscrew it and check / clean the filter. Likewise, check that the drain hose, and the part of the sink where it drains into, is not blocked. Oh, and on the inlet hose, make sure that the tap is turned on and that water is actually coming through the pipe.

Failing that, try googling for the model number - a lot of repair "hints and tips" are out there on t'interweb thingy :-) You may well find the answer to your problem.

Sounds like the motor brushes are worn out. They are usually easy to replace once you buy a new set from a domestic appliance parts supplier. When mine went on a Bosch machine I just googled the machine model and problem and found a method on hoe to replace the parts. Cost about £20 and machine as good as new.

No offence, but could you make it clearer as to what's happening...or not happening. :p

Most machines, you turn on, shove clothes in, select your program and put detergent/softener in, press start (or push the program timer in/out) and away it goes. Then it might drain before filling with water, proceed with wash cycle, followed by intermittent spins and rinses, before finally finishing off with the final rinse program which puts the softerner in the wash - finished off with what is usually the highest speed spin of the cycle.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.

Sorry about vague diagnosis - I'll get another look at it tomorrow, in daylight, then report back!
