New laptop connecting advice please

I've just been given a brand spanking new laptop but don't know how to connect it to a broadband connection. I have a desktop with a ASDL connection but don't want to keep switching plugs etc.
Do I need to buy a router and modem and which one please and should be grateful as to advice where to buy it from. Thanks.

Assuming that wireless is built into the laptop, and the PC has an ethernet card..
BT line ... wireless ADSL router
Cable .... wireless broadband Cable/DSL router
ebuyer, broadbandbuyer, dsl-warehouse sell them
Search the forum for the word router, and you will find recommendations and tips galore..
