She wants to dump the home onto him, therefore it sounds to me as if there are a lot more liabilities on it than he is aware of, e.g. debt loans against its value.

I know this isnt answering what you are asking regarding the house but if you are such a good friend then why havent you told him about his wifes affair?!

OP, you mate sounds like a really level headed person if he's coping with all this - it must be really hard. I think it will potentially complicate things if she's not working. This makes it sound more obvious to me - if he's on the mortgage and she kicks him out, he will have to contiue to pay it at least up until the courts get to the final financial part of the divorce. If he's not on the mortgage, then he isn't liable and she has noone to milk for the cash while the mess is sorted out.

Given she doesn't work and he is by the sounds of it quite well off, I can see her going for everything she can get. He needs a solicitor and a good one. The primary concern of any court will be the kids.

newcook, I think the guy knows already - he's just preparing himself.

Newcook it would look like john knows reading the first post but his wife doesnt know that he knows. She sounds like a rather devious piece of work to me and i certainly wouldnt want to get finacially tied to her with a large debt like a mortgage.

And before you point out the children are not his, there is a concept of "child of the family".
