Taking item back to argos without receipt

I bought a nappy bin from argos but on opening it up it doesn't contain the one refill cassette that it is meant to and it looks slightly different to what was in the book. Although by the same brand. I can't find my receipt any where, they said it can not be returned unless it is faulty. Well it isn't faulty but has a missing item and looks different. Do you think i can take it back without my receipt to see if i can get the refill?

You can try, but they really are entitled to see some evidence that you bought it from them, so they may simply refuse.

A few years ago you might have been given some leeway, but the "lost receipt" story is used so extensively by shoplifters these days that many will just say no, irrespective of the circumstances.

The fact that it looks slightly different probably won't be relevant either - most catalogue companies like Argos have a "right to change the spec" clause in their T&Cs, so if it's functionally equivalent you can't return it on that basis.

If you paid by card just go in with that and the item and the store can trace the transaction - if you paid by non-credit/debit card tender you may be stuffed to be honest as the store will need a proof of purchase.

Have you tried looking inside the lid? I rememember once serving a customer with a similar issue and it turned out that the refill was already attached to the lid bit.

At the till you should have been told that either "A substitute may be received of similar/same specification but cosmetically different" or "The design of this item may differ from the catalogue/flyer". If you paid on the QuickPay kiosk the message is displayed on there too.
