right and wrong at the same time.

a hardware firewall will not be affected by software firewall, then we look at the windows firewall, while it's better than nothing, it's not much bettr than nothing.

presuming it's a new computer so will probably have Vista installed, use Comodo (free version)

and please when posting questions about your comp include some info about your setup, for all I know you could be running Slax instead of windows.

Actually its a very old, creaky, pc running xp home. Don't know if that signifies anything.
In a different post I asked about a problem I have been having with AVG that post here:http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=22902473#post22902473

Do I need to carry out all the actions suggested by aliEnRIK BEFORE I connect the new router?
I don't want to remotely infect my daughter's new laptop.
    thanks
    Stop looking for answers....

OK, lets start at the beginning,,, For your PC
download a couple of small tools first, hijackthis and ccleaner, you'll find both on download.com, both are free.

install/run ccleaner, but read as your installing, don't let it install the yahoo toolbar, this will free a lot of room on your comp, & should speed it up when scanning files etc.

update AVG, then restart pc & boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 as the pc is booting up, before it gets to the windows screen) go into test settings for AVG and select Scan All Files and tick the box for heuristics, now run your scan. go have a cup of tea, let it do it's thing.

Hopefully the comp will be running a bit faster already after that.

when that's done, run HijackThis and copy/paste the log back here, DONT fix anything until we see what is there.

It would be prudent to cleanup your pc fully before connecting to the router, even though there is no evidence of a worm, which would be the main thing to worry about if connecting a new pc to a network with an infected pc.

    Back to the firewall question.

Hardware firewalls (NAT router) stops hackers getting in, the most important requirement of any firewall - a router is far better at this than a software firewall, no configuration is required, they work out of the box.

A software firewall is an extra layer of protection.

Software firewalls are of 2 main types, basic ones (inbound) such as the windows inbuilt one, can stop worm infections spreading across your network, but don't stop malware (you already have) talking to the outside world.

Software firewalls with outbound protection, either warn you if some piece of malware is attempting to talk to the outside world (they don't tell you whether it's malware or legit, you have to decide), or block it automatically. Block the wrong thing, something will stop working.

More trouble than they are worth imo, stick to using your router and windows firewall, and a good virus scanner (avira not avg!), with occasional malwarebytes scans.

Bit different to your suggestion cos I has already started! but hopefully the following 2 logs from Malwarebytes & Hijack should tell you what you need to know. I also run Spybots in case that signifies...
FYI pC has AMD Athlon XP2200x; 1.79GH & 224MB RAM.
Here come the logs (I deleted the Malwarebytes list of items before saving :))
Crazy amount of things you have running, couple of items I'd seriously question whether you actually need them but its your PC not mine. No glaring problems with malware, too many bhos and a couple of other areas I expect slow things down a lot. I'll look at it again

So to speed it up a bit I'd start by upgrading your ram, it's dirt cheap at the moment. Or get rid of all the stuff you don't need, preferably do both things.

& what is winsey.co.uk ? the site is apparently up for sale
