Varnish over wallpaper

Hi,

I have a query which I was hoping if you DIY experts can help with please.

We had an old chester that we are thinking of covering up with Wall Paper. It is not wood so we can not sand it and repaint it.

Now I know that you shouldn't varnish over wallpapers on the walls as it is very difficult to remove it in future.

But I was wondering if I can apply varnish after papering the chester so as to save it from scuffs and marks.

If yes, then which varnish should I apply - will it is polyurethane varnish

Thanks you very much
