Hi
have white gloss painted doors. I want to go over them with eggshell as I like a matt finish. Can i just paint straight on the gloss or should i sand first? Also do i need to use the oil based eggshell?
Thanks

yes good answer,
now, can I put woodstain on gloss, I wont be trying to go lighter?0 -
Hi Bootalishus, oil based eggshell isn't a matt finish, its a semi shine.A matt finish is never a good finish on doors as you will see finger marks within days of painting..0

Leveller2911 is right, eggshell is a midsheen finish. As far as I'm aware, no retail brand does a matt finish oil based paint, the exception possibly being Zinsser.
Bootalishus, it's not necessary to use an oil based eggshell if you don't want too. The fumes can be too much for some people and the drying time can be, well, looong. I have to admit though, personally I think the oil based products are best. However, others may well disagree.
As for frugalmacdugal, you can't put a stain over paint - you'll make a hash of it. If it's a gloss woodstain, then you can re-stain over that not a problem. Again, you should always use an abrasive to key the surface; a 120g sandpaper would suffice.0
