Do I need a full rewire?

Options
Just had 2 different companies round to quote for elec work (don't have the numbers back yet) one said that the wires in our extension and kitchen was fine and didn't need touching-That if anyone told us we needed a full rewire we were being taken for a ride. The other told us that anyone who said we didn't need a full rewire was doing a shoddy job.

I can clearly see the difference in ages between some of the elec work, would it be ok to leave some of the old wires in there or should i just get it all changed?

Getting it all changed would invole (apparently) taking up the flat roof on the extension and removing some of the tiles in the kitchen/stone floor in bathroom none of which i fancy doing!!

Thanks in advance for all opinions!

It depends on what you’re requirements are but you could always start with the basics. Get a new consumer unit fitted – part of the job is to test all circuits as they get reinstated. Replace only the circuits that don’t come up to standard.

There is no way that you can get an properly informed opinion from anyone who has not seen the job. Every situation is completely different. Houses with mixed age wiring can be very complicated to sort out. I can only suggest that you keep getting quotes. Make sure that you have a good chat with the person quoting to find out exactly what they think the problems are and what they propose to do to solve them. There are various ways of gaining access to awkward areas. Some are less destructive than others. Electricians will normally go down the easiest route for access and also the one that involves the least amount of making good. Different people have different ways of doing things. If the wiring in the extension ceiling is OK then it can stay.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
